At Incendia, we believe that behind every strong community are women who lead, inspire, and quietly shape the future around them. Through our Women of Incendia series, we celebrate Maldivian women whose journeys reflect resilience, leadership, and purpose.
Today, we feature Aminath Leela — a leader in the banking sector and a passionate advocate for community development.
Meet Aminath Leela
Aminath Leela is from K. Malé, and her journey is rooted in values shaped by a humble yet deeply supportive upbringing.
Growing up, Leela describes her childhood as strict but very loving. Her parents instilled in their children strong values, discipline, and respect. Life was lived on a tight budget, which meant learning early on to prioritize needs over wants.
While material comforts were limited, what she gained was far more valuable — responsibility, gratitude, and an understanding of the importance of hard work.
“We didn’t always have everything we desired, but we always had everything we needed.”
These early lessons would later become the foundation of her professional and personal life.
A Leader in Banking and Community
Today, Aminath Leela serves as the Head of Branches and Service Centres – Malé’ Region at the Bank of Maldives, where she oversees six branches and service centres.
Her role focuses on:
- Operational excellence
- Service quality
- Team leadership
- Delivering a consistent and high standard of customer experience across the region
Beyond her corporate career, Leela also serves as the Vice President of the Netball Association of Maldives, reflecting her commitment to leadership beyond the workplace and her dedication to developing sports and community initiatives in the country.
Those who know her best describe her as a friendly and approachable leader.
She believes leadership is not just about managing operations — it’s about supporting people, listening carefully, and helping others grow.
“I genuinely care about people — whether it’s my family, my staff, or my peers. I always try to motivate and support those around me.”
Inspired by the Power to Help Others
For Leela, the motivation behind her career has always been simple: helping people.
Since childhood, she has naturally gravitated toward supporting others. Banking gave her a platform to do exactly that — assisting individuals and businesses with financial services that help them grow and achieve their goals.
As her career progressed, she discovered another passion: leadership.
Working closely with teams, solving complex challenges, and improving service standards reinforced her dedication to the field.
The opportunity to guide teams and contribute to meaningful improvements in customer experience continues to drive her forward.
Navigating Challenges with Empathy and Structure
Leadership often comes with complexity. One of the biggest challenges Leela has faced is managing multiple branches with diverse teams while ensuring consistent service quality across every location.
Each branch has its own dynamics, strengths, and customer expectations.
To address this, she focused on:
- Strengthening communication
- Setting clear performance expectations
- Conducting regular engagement sessions with staff and branch managers
Listening became a key leadership tool.
By understanding operational gaps and providing the right support, she was able to build stronger teams and maintain high standards across the region.
Another challenge was maintaining motivation during high-pressure periods.
Her approach was simple yet powerful: be present, approachable, and solution-oriented.
“I believe in leading by example, staying calm under pressure, and encouraging collaboration.”
These experiences strengthened her leadership philosophy — that challenges can be overcome through teamwork, empathy, and structured follow-through.
Advice to Young Women
When asked what advice she would give to young women striving to make a difference, her message is clear and powerful:
“Do not wait for permission to lead.”
Confidence, she says, is built through action — by stepping forward even when you feel uncertain.
There will be moments when women are underestimated or questioned, but she believes those moments should become fuel for growth rather than barriers.
Her message is a reminder that leadership is not defined by titles.
“Let your work, integrity, and resilience speak for you. Be bold enough to take responsibility, strong enough to face setbacks, and wise enough to keep learning.”
And perhaps most importantly:
“Lift others as you rise.”
Because true leadership is not about position — it is about impact.
